Rouzer praises Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel

Today, Congressman David Rouzer released the statement below following President Donald J. Trump’s press conference recognizing the city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“I strongly support President Trump’s move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.  For thousands of years the historic and national identity of the Jewish people has been under attack by extremists and others wishing to cause harm and destruction to the people of Israel.

Jerusalem has always been the rightful capital of Israel.  I’m very grateful that President Trump not only recognizes this fact, but has the courage to act on it.  I urge our allies in the Middle East and throughout the world to join the United States in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s eternal capital.”

BACKGROUND:  In 1995, the House of Representatives and Senate passed the 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act with the purpose of moving the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as well as recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.  For the last two decades, American presidents have exercised the law’s waiver on a semi-annual base to suspend the relocation of the embassy.  In his speech, President Trump instructed the State Department to develop a plan to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
