Explanation of Request: Funding will support the acquisition of a modern bomb robot, communications equipment, such as mobile repeaters for command and specialty vehicles to provide more reliable communications and interoperability during crisis situations, and in-car camera systems to capture events for criminal prosecutions and professional standards reviews. This project is a valuable use of taxpayer dollars because the City of Wilmington’s Police Department is host agency for Cape Fear Regional Special Teams, a cooperative of public safety agencies that combine resources to enhance emergency response and preparedness in the following areas: special weapons and tactics; explosive device remediation, crisis negotiations, and emergency logistical support. Ten agencies participate in the cooperative, spanning New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick counties, as well as UNC Wilmington and the North Carolina State Ports. This project will increase public safety across a large regional area and create coordination and accountability in police practices.
