Alert: Surge in Fraudulent Texts
Washington,
June 6, 2025

Rep. David Rouzer
I've recently been made aware of a surge in fraudulent text messages in which scammers impersonate the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). These messages falsely claim recipients owe unpaid fines, fees, or tolls. They are sent randomly in an attempt to steal personal and financial information. What to do if you receive a message you think may be a scam:
Please note: The State of North Carolina does not collect payments through unsolicited text messages, instant messages, or emails. If you receive a text message claiming to be about unpaid fines, fees, or tolls that you suspect is a scam, please report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). |
