  • The State Department is continuing to coordinate with the Peruvian government on all options for US citizens to depart.  To date, approximately 500 American tourists have departed Peru.  The U.S. Embassy will continue messaging as additional flights are finalized.  These flights are subject to reimbursement. Citizens are advised to adhere to quarantine guidelines.

  • Is the U.S. Embassy organizing charter flights for U.S. citizens?
    The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has coordinated charter flights – the first two flights departing Monday, March 23 – from La Aurora airport in Guatemala City to the United States.  We do not know when civilian flights will resume in Guatemala after these U.S. government-coordinated charter flights, but urge travelers to continue to check the availability of commercial flight options.

  • Who pays for these charter flights and how much do they cost?
    Under U.S. law, passengers on a U.S. government-organized charter flight are responsible for paying the cost of their ticket, which may be higher than standard commercial fares. You must sign a promissory note before boarding, which you then must pay back to the State Department after returning to the United States.? No cash or credit card payments will be accepted at the airport.? You will be responsible for any arrangements or costs (lodging, onward destination or local transportation, etc.) beyond your initial destination in the United States.??Exact departure time and routing are subject to change.
    • Our initial estimate for flights from Guatemala City is roughly $500, but this could change. Please do not hold off on registering for a charter flight due to fear of incurring a debt.  You will not incur any debt for the flight until you physically sign the promissory note at the airport, and you will know the exact price when you sign.

  • How can I sign up for one of these charter flights?
    If you have not done so already, and you want to depart on a U.S government charter flight from Guatemala City, please email the information, requested in the bullets below, to? Do not send an additional request if you have done so previously and received a response from the Embassy that you have been added to the list.   • Who gets a seat on these charter flights?
    Flight seats will be prioritized for U.S. citizens and their eligible family members (including those with identified health concerns), Legal Permanent Residents of the United States, and then others as seats may become available.? Please do not call the Embassy to confirm receipt of your email — we will contact you if you are confirmed for a seat. 

  • Should I wait at the airport in Guatemala City to board one of these flights?
    The U.S. Embassy urges any interested travelers *NOT* to arrive at La Aurora airport in Guatemala City until they have received an official communication from the U.S. Embassy with confirmed flight details and booking.? You will not be permitted to enter the airport without confirmation from the U.S. Embassy of a seat on the flight.

  • I am currently outside of Guatemala City. When should I plan to travel?
    Since flights may occur on short notice and all flights will depart from La Aurora airport in Guatemala City, we urge eligible travelers who are currently outside of the Guatemala City metro area to begin preparations to move towards the capital.

  • Are there any health screenings?
    Anyone with flu-like symptoms will not be allowed to board a flight and is requested not to come to the airport. Travelers seeking transport on US Embassy charter flights will not be permitted to travel if they are exhibiting flu-like symptoms and should not come to the airport.

  • Can I check luggage?
    Travelers on State Department charter flights are allowed one checked bag (max. weight 50 lbs), one carry on bag, and one personal item.  Pets will not be allowed.

  • The unprecedented health crisis we are experiencing in Honduras is taking place all over the globe. The embassy has been working to help you get home as soon as possible. On Friday, March 20, the government of Honduras provided authorization for commercial, charter, and private aircraft to land in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, and Roatan to fly out stranded foreigners. We understand some air carriers have begun setting up those flights.  Continue to check with your airline on flight availability.

  • While the embassy has been in daily contact with airline headquarters, we do not have access to their booking information. You must seek specific flight information from the company you are ticketed with or seeking to purchase a ticket from. For charter and private flight requests, we can help you with making a request to the Honduran government for landing approval. 

  • The government of Honduras has been very helpful and flexible in granting these requests.  We will work with them to get approval as soon as possible, but please be patient as the government deals with multiple requests. Charter flights shouldn’t depart the United States until they have landing approval and they need at least 24 hours to be approved by the Honduran government.

  • The government is enforcing a total curfew until at least March 29 in the whole country. Supermarkets, pharmacies, groceries, and other delivery services are authorized to provide delivery service.   • On March 20, the government of Honduras announced that foreigners who would like to return to their countries – can depart/travel air or land, with an authorized letter of transit from SINAGER, a government entity similar to FEMA in the United States.  The government is still finalizing its procedures for distributing that letter and the embassy in in close contact with them as they do.

  • U.S. citizens who are present in Honduras should enroll in the Department of State’s SmartTraveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  Enrollment in STEP enables the American Citizen Services unit in Tegucigalpa to reach out directly to U.S. citizen in need of assistance.  STEP also allows U.S. citizens to receive Alerts to convey information about terrorist threats, security incidents, planned demonstrations, natural disasters, etc.

  • Also, U.S. citizens, especially those in need of medical assistance, should consider contacting 504 Assist, which is a travel insurance provided by the government of Honduras free of charge, as they may be able to assist stranded travelers.  The web address and phone numbers are:  ><, +504 2276-3780 or +1 888-296-9541 (from the United States).  They have bilingual operators and are open 24/7.

Cebu Sweeper Flights – The U.S. Embassy has been advised by Philippine local authorities that there may be “sweeper” flights available tomorrow, March 24, 2020, from Cebu.  For more information and seat reservations, please immediately contact the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Help Desk, telephone 032-494-9000.

The DOT created a Tourism Airport Team to provide 24-hour service to tourists at airports including assistance in arranging flights, securing bookings, transportation, meals and accommodation.  DOT regional offices are assisting all stranded passengers. DOT staff are present in airports.
