Coronavirus Update -- May 9, 2020

Here’s the latest:

  •  As North Carolina moves to ease some COVID-19 restrictions which took effect yesterday at 5 p.m., the NC Department of Health and Human Services is asking people to remember these three things when at work or while in retail shops to continue to slow the spread of COVID-19 and flatten the curve:
    • Wear a cloth face covering if you will be with other people.
    • Wait 6 feet apart.  Avoid close contact.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer.
    • A Frequently Asked Questions document on masks and face coverings is available here.

  • The Treasury Department and the IRS are urging people to use the Get My Payment app by Noon on Wednesday, May 13, to  expedite delivery of your CARES Act stimulus payment.  More than 130 million Americans have already received payments totaling more than $200 billion in the program’s first four weeks.

  • Starting this week, school buses will serve as Wi-Fi hot spots in communities across North Carolina that do not have access to high speed internet.  This plan follows the Governor’s announcement that K-12 public schools will continue remote learning through the end of the 2019-2020 school year.  More from the Governor’s office here.

  • Here’s the latest from Johnston County on the COVID-19 outbreak.

For today’s good news story, I’m highlighting the Mount Olive Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Mount Olive, hosting parades to honor high school seniors.  There will be two separate parades held to honor seniors.  On Tuesday, May 12, Southern Wayne High School seniors will participate in the parade.  On Tuesday, May 19, Spring Creek High School, North Duplin and Mount Olive residents who are seniors at Wayne Early Middle, Wayne School or Engineering and Wayne Country Day will participate in the second parade.  Any Mount Olive residents who are seniors at Faith Christian or Wayne Christian are also welcome to join the parade on May 19th.

As always, visit Coronavirus.gov and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services’ website for the latest on the outbreak.
