Congressman David Rouzer (NC-07) today issued the following statement after opposing H. Con. Res. 83, the Democrats’ War Powers Resolution, on the House floor:

“Throughout our history, presidents of both parties have rightly claimed their inherent constitutional authority to use military force without congressional authorization to protect our national interests, including the defense of any U.S. personnel or diplomatic facilities abroad, as long as that use of force is limited in nature, scope, and duration,” said Congressman Rouzer. 

“Iranian Gen. Soleimani – who had been designated a terrorist by the Obama Administration and was the world’s most dangerous living mastermind of evil and murder – was very much a legitimate military target and a threat to the security of our men and women in uniform as well as other U.S. personnel in Iraq and throughout the Middle East.  The President’s action to take Soleimani out was an appropriate, decisive action to remove an enemy combatant from the battlefield. 

“The concurrent resolution we voted on today is non-binding, meaning it has no force of law; however, it does send a very dangerous and strong signal to Iran and the rest of the world that American politics no longer stops at the water’s edge,” Rouzer said.
