This Past Week in DC

Working to Secure the Supply Chain Against Iranian-Backed Attacks

Ongoing Iranian-backed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are disrupting global shipping routes, threatening supply chains, and endangering human life.  The attacks on commercial ships have resulted in major ocean carriers diverting routes through the Red Sea and instead sailing around the Cape of Good Hope.  We cannot allow these bad actors to punish our nation and cripple our supply chain without swift recourse.

This week, I joined the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee hearing examining these threats against civilian and military vessels.  I emphasized how these disruptions are threatening supply chains and sought answers on the impact delayed shipments are currently having on the global economy as well as consumers.  I also questioned witnesses on how Congress can best prepare for congestion issues at U.S. ports in the coming months if attacks continue in the Red Sea and Suez Canal.  Click here or on the image below to view my remarks.

I also led my colleagues on the bipartisan Supply Chain Caucus, of which I'm a founder, in sending a letter to the Biden Administration requesting continued efforts and oversight to secure the Red Sea shipping lanes and restore the safe passage of trade in the region.

Supporting Pro-Growth Tax Legislation

As House Republicans continue working to reduce reckless spending by Congressional Democrats and President Biden, pro-growth tax policies are needed to support American workers, families, and job creators.

This past week, with my support, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act.  This legislation restores key provisions from the Republican-led 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to build a stronger economy here at home and increase American competitiveness on the world stage.

This includes making permanent certain tax provisions from the historic 2017 tax reform legislation which incentivized investment, productivity, and work.  I'm proud to support this legislation to reduce the tax burden on hardworking Americans, support our small businesses, and make life more affordable for North Carolinians.  These provisions contributed to nearly $1 trillion more in revenues to the US Treasury than the Congressional Budget Office anticipated.  How you say?  Because the economy grew that much more leading to a larger tax base.

Securing Critical Permitting Reforms to Improve Our Infrastructure Network

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved two pieces of legislation I introduced aimed at reducing burdensome and duplicative government regulations.

The first piece of legislation passed by the Committee is H.R. 7023, the Creating Confidence in Clean Water Permitting Act.  H.R. 7023 includes my bill to streamline the Nationwide Permit (NWP) process for regulated entities involved in improving U.S. energy production, transportation infrastructure, and other commercial activities.

The Committee also passed my bill H.R. 5089, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act.  H.R. 5089 eliminates duplicative and unnecessary regulatory burdens at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) while maintaining rigorous public health and environmental protections.

Time is money, and ensuring important infrastructure and energy development projects do not become stuck in a bureaucratic quagmire is vital to addressing supply chain challenges and promoting commerce.  Together, the policy solutions passed out of the full committee this week include targeted, commonsense reforms to make regulations simple to understand and easy to follow, which has the added benefit of making them easier to enforce.  In doing so we can keep projects on time as well as on budget, all while maintaining our nation's clean water infrastructure.  Read more here.

This Week's Good News Story

Congratulations to Elizabethtown Mayor Sylvia Campbell on being presented The Order of the Long Leaf Pine at the recent Annual Meeting of the Elizabethtown-White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

As featured in the Bladen Journal, "Chamber Member Robin Summerlin presented the award to Mrs. Campbell expressing gratitude for her years of service in town government where she first served on the Town’s Planning Board and Town Council and has spent the last 16 years as Mayor."  Mayor Campbell was also commended for her "impact as one of the owners of Campbell Oil Company, her leadership in social issues, and her participation in organizations like Bladen We Care as well as her forty-plus years as an organist and choir director at Elizabethtown Presbyterian."

According to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Society, North Carolina governors "reserve their highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award, for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments."  I’m very proud of this achievement for Mayor Campbell, who I have been honored to work with on issues impacting the folks of Elizabethtown during my time in Congress.
