Dear Friend, I enjoyed traveling through North Carolina this week, meeting with NC-07 students, hosting an annual event that Congressman Greg Murphy and I have hosted for several years to increase flood resiliency in our state, and visiting one of the best small towns on Southeastern North Carolina's coastline.  Keep reading below for more information on these visits, as well as an update on my efforts to oppose the NC Rate Bureau's proposed increase in homeowners' insurance rates. Updates from NC-07

Congratulating NC-07 Service Academy Nominees

It’s an honor to nominate some of the best and brightest students of Southeastern North Carolina to attend a United States Service Academy where those who are offered an appointment will receive a first-rate undergraduate education while giving back to our nation through military service.

Last weekend I hosted a reception to celebrate the NC-07 students who received one of my nominations along with their families.  It was an honor to join them and recognize their hard work and dedication.  Please join me in congratulating these young men and women and wish them the best of luck as they move forward with the application process!

Urging the NC Department of Insurance to Reject Astronomical Increases in Homeowners' Insurance Rates

As you may know, on January 5th, NC Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the North Carolina Rate Bureau requested a proposed increase in homeowner insurance rates by an average of 42.2% statewide, with coastal counties potentially facing an increase of more than 99%.

In response to this, my colleagues and I sent a letter urging Commissioner Mike Causey to reject the Bureau’s proposed statewide increase in homeowners' insurance rates.

While it certainly costs more to rebuild homes damaged by storms because of rampant inflation resulting from President Biden’s failed economic policies, arbitrary astronomical increases in insurance rates are out of bounds.  Such increases would negatively impact everyone who owns a home and make homeownership impossible for many.  I am sure Commissioner Causey will reject these high rate increases and work to reach the best outcome attainable under Bidenflation.  Every citizen concerned about these proposed rate increases should register their opposition with the NC Department of Insurance.  Emailed public comments should be sent by February 2, 2024 to: 2024Homeowners@ncdoi.gov.

Visiting the Calabash Fire Department

I traveled down to one of NC-07's finest coastal communities this week to visit with the Calabash Fire Department.  I enjoyed touring their firehouse as we discussed federal grants and programs available to local fire departments that can help protect our communities.  Thank you for having me and for all of the work you do to keep Southeast Brunswick County safe!  While in town, I also stopped by the Boundary House for lunch to enjoy everyone's favorite Calabash-style seafood!

Visiting Sam's Club

I enjoyed my recent visit to Sam’s Club in Wilmington!  It was great to visit with the employees and learn more about how businesses like Sam’s Club help drive our local economy forward by creating jobs and supporting NC farm families.

Hosting the Third Annual WATERS Summit

Many communities in North Carolina have experienced devastating flooding due to major storms across our state.

This past week, Congressman Greg Murphy and I hosted our Third Annual WATERS Summit where we convened leading experts to build on our work to protect North Carolinians from flood risk.  Our discussions highlighted how we can harness new technologies, better utilize our agriculture community to help manage our state’s water resources, and work at every level of government to improve our state’s flood resiliency.

This Week's Good News Story

For this week's good news story, I'm highlighting a Wilmington chef who was recently named a semifinalist for a prestigious award, the James Beard Foundation's 2024 Restaurant and Chef Awards.  According to WWAY, "Dean Neff, Chef & Owner of Seabird, is one of 20 chefs nationwide included on the list of semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation’s 2024 Restaurant and Chef Awards. The official nominees will be announced on April 3. Neff hopes his inclusion on the list will be an opportunity to bring more recognition to restaurants around the Cape Fear."
