House Republicans made a Commitment to America in 2022, promising an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future built on freedom, and a government that's accountable. We fulfilled that commitment week after week, voting on some of the most comprehensive, commonsense bills in history. However, almost every bill passed in the House is currently collecting dust on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) desk.
That should change in the 119th Congress. Republicans will hold the majority in the House, Senate, and have the Presidency. This makes it much easier to get bills heard, passed and signed into law. Senate Republicans, now headed by Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), are in lockstep on priorities for the 119th Congress.
Important to Understand: With the exception of Budget Reconciliation legislation, Senate rules and precedent require 60 votes to end debate on a bill in the Senate, including the appropriations bills. While Senator Schumer will no longer control what bills come to the floor, he and the other Democrat members of the Senate will still have significant influence on legislation in order to get the 60 votes necessary to move to a final vote on a bill. This means some accommodation with Senate Democrats will have to be made to get anything passed in the Senate. Our Founders believed strongly in protecting the rights of the minority. Remember, it was a parliamentary system of majority rule that they rebelled against!
