This Week in DC

Leading Legislation to Cut Red Tape & Increase Permitting Efficiency

Permitting delays are stifling important infrastructure projects across the country.  As Chairman of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee, I led members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in introducing multiple bills to cut red tape, streamline reviews, and provide a predictable permitting process to help improve U.S. energy production and the timeliness of infrastructure projects.

My bill, the Nationwide Permitting Improvement Act, makes commonsense permitting reforms to keep projects on time and goods moving.  A predictable permitting process is imperative for building the infrastructure necessary to responsibly utilize our natural resources, unleashing American energy production so that we are an even more dominant player world-wide, and improving our transportation network.  Click here to read more about my bill as well as other measures I have co-sponsored to make commonsense reforms to the permitting process.

Examining the State of American Transportation Infrastructure

This week, filling in for Chairman Sam Graves who was stuck in Missouri due to inclement weather, I was tapped to lead my colleagues during a hearing on the state of our transportation network and our nation’s ability to effectively and efficiently move goods through our supply chain.  To achieve this goal, we must make targeted investments to improve the infrastructure our shippers, truckers, and freighters rely on.

During the hearing, I highlighted the work needed to be done to ensure taxpayer funds are directed to projects that strengthen the state of transportation in the country.  Despite the clear needs of our system, the Administration continues to push its Green New Deal agenda via onerous regulations on the American people instead of focusing its efforts on promptly distributing funds to projects that will meaningfully improve our roads, bridges, inland waterways, and ports.

I also highlighted the vulnerabilities in our supply chain, including the disruptions to maritime trade in the Red Sea caused by the recent Houthi militant attacks on cargo vessels.  These threats have forced major carriers to opt for longer, more costly shipping routes, as they pause operations in the area.

Closer to home, the crisis at our southern border has led to repeated closures of rail border crossings.  As a result, rail operations have been suspended – halting the movement of critical goods between the United States and Mexico in order to process the influx of migrant crossings.  All of this translates to increased costs for goods and services, further fueling inflation.

A+ Rating for Championing Pro-Life Values

I'm honored to earn the highest rating on the SBA Pro-Life America’s National Pro-Life Scorecard for standing up for the most vulnerable among us.  This week, with my support, House Republicans passed two bills to protect and foster a culture of life.

Under Title IX, pregnant students cannot be discriminated against or lose scholarships, housing, or other opportunities due to pregnancy.  Yet unfortunately, many pregnant students feel pressured to choose between their child and academic success.  To support students who are balancing school, pregnancy, and their health, we must raise awareness on the resources available to help them succeed.  The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act fosters a culture of life by requiring colleges and universities to inform pregnant women on campus of the rights, resources, and protections available to them while pursuing an education.

The second bill, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, protects pregnancy centers following President Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services' proposed rule to restrict Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding for pregnancy centers.  This bill would prohibit the Administration from restricting this funding for pregnancy centers whose mission is to support new mothers and families.

U.S. Naval Academy Summer Programs for Students: The Naval Academy Summer Seminar and Summer STEM Applications opened on January 4 and will remain open until April 15.  Naval Academy Summer Seminar offers an opportunity for rising high school seniors to experience USNA for one week and learn about life when attending the Naval Academy.  The Summer STEM Program is an opportunity for participants to create, build, and explore in world-class lab facilities, working alongside USNA’s distinguished faculty and Midshipmen.

This Week's Good News Story

For this week's good news story, I'm highlighting the Calabash Elks Lodge 2679 for supporting student veterans through the Foundation of Brunswick Community College.  According to the Brunswick Beacon, "the Veterans Affairs Committee of Calabash Elks Lodge 2679 marked the beginning of the new year with a generous $2,000 donation to The Foundation of Brunswick Community College. The funds will bolster the Partnership for American Veterans Employment (PAVE) program to help veteran students gain the skills and education needed to succeed. The PAVE program supports an institutional work-study initiative for veterans that enables them to gain employment while attending school. PAVE bridges the gap between what the GI Bill provides and the total cost, including living expenses, of pursuing their education." More can and should be done to improve the care and lives of our veterans who have so nobly served this country, and I applaud the Calabash Elks Lodge for contributing to this effort!
