Voting No on Democrats' Continuing Resolution

Congress voted on a short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through December 16, 2022.

While the majority party refused to negotiate with Republicans during the appropriation process to address pressing issues facing American families – including rampant inflation, the supply chain crisis, the border crisis, or the increasing overdoses associated with deadly drugs like fentanyl flowing across our open southern border – Washington Democrats instead chose to kick the can down the road, setting up another government funding showdown this December.

This CR provides nearly $2 billion for unaccompanied minors yet provides no additional funding for border security or our Customs and Border Protection officers.  The bill also includes $1 billion to subsidize home heating and cooling costs resulting from President Biden's war on American energy production.

This legislation is a missed opportunity to make sure government works for you, not against you.  When Republicans gain control of the House, we will fight America’s inflation crisis, work to rein in out-of-control-spending, and pass pro-growth tax and deregulatory policies to increase opportunities for families across the country. President Biden and Senate Democrats will have the opportunity to course-correct when these House Republican bills pass on the House floor and get sent to the Senate for consideration.

National Manufacturing Week

North Carolina's Seventh Congressional District is home to many manufacturing jobs which play a significant role in boosting our local economy.  I was honored to recently visit a few of our local manufacturers to recognize the importance of this industry and to discuss the challenges they are facing in our current economy.

Stopping by Gregory Poole Equipment Company

Gregory-Poole Equipment Company began operations on April 1, 1951 in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Now, they employ more than 1,250 employees at 25 facilities.  During my tour of the facility in Leland, we discussed the challenges impacting equipment manufacturers such as labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and the rising cost of materials.

Resources

Hurricane Ian:  Please visit my website Rouzer.House.Gov/Hurricane if you need recovery assistance of any kind.

Disaster Tax Relief:  Taxpayers can find disaster tax relief information including the most recent tax relief provisions for those affected by disaster situations on the Tax Relief in Disaster Situations page on IRS.gov.  See FAQs for Disaster Victims for information about the definition of an affected taxpayer.

Updates from the IRS:  For those who still need to file a 2021 tax return, the IRS encourages taxpayers to electronically file a complete and accurate 2021 tax return any time before the October deadline, even if you requested a filing extension. You should not mail a paper return if you don’t have to.  This will significantly delay the processing of your return and therefore any refund if you are owed one.

Military Academy Nomination Deadline: I wanted to remind parents and students the deadline to apply for a service academy nomination is coming up on October 31st.  All high school students admitted into our nation’s military service academies must first receive a nomination from at least one member of their state’s Congressional Delegation, the Vice President, or the President of the United States. Interested students seeking a nomination should visit my website to access the application and learn more about the application process.

This Week's Good News Story

For this week's good news story, I would like to recognize the Wilmington firefighters who traveled to Florida to help with Hurricane Ian relief.  As many of our communities know too well, hurricane recovery requires all hands on deck.  According to WECT, "While on the ground, they saw everything from boats flung into homes to pools sitting in the streets. A disaster like this only adds to a mentally and physically challenging job, and they said getting to ease that burden for others is just as powerful for them."  I applaud these first responders who did not hesitate to assist Floridians in need.  Thank you for your service!

Closing Thoughts...
