This past week, we made critical progress as the Agriculture Committee advanced a key budget reconciliation proposal that invests in rural development and a much better safety net for farm families across the country. Food security is national security.

We also observed National Police Week, a week to recognize the dedication of our law enforcement and a renewal of our commitment to supporting them with the resources and respect they deserve. More details below!

House Committee on Agriculture Passes Budget Reconciliation Proposal

This past Wednesday night, the House Committee on Agriculture passed our budget reconciliation proposal to save taxpayers more than $290 billion while making major investments in production agriculture.

After months of collaboration, the House Agriculture Committee has delivered on our portion of the reconciliation package to achieve the President’s America First Policy agenda. This legislation secures critical investments for North Carolina’s ag economy and makes responsible reforms to SNAP to protect the program for those truly in need. These commonsense reforms reflect the values of hardworking North Carolinians while encouraging economic growth across farm country.

Highlights of the Budget Resolution

Makes key investments in the farm economy through improvements to the farm safety net and crop insurance
Helps American farmers compete through investments in export promotion programs
Enhances livestock biosecurity
Bolsters specialty crop and university-led agriculture research
Introduces a state benefit-share within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to ensure accountability at the state level where these benefits are administered
Restrains future Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) updates
Expands the Work Requirement for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) and closes state loopholes that are encouraging abuse of the program
Stops a Biden-era internet utility loophole disincentivizing work
Controls runaway state administrative costs
Restricts SNAP eligibility for those illegally in the country

Celebration of Construction on the National Mall

It was the 2025 Celebration of Construction on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. this past week. The event, organized by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, showcases the latest innovations in construction technology, sustainability, and workforce development. It featured interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and policy discussions between industry leaders and policymakers, highlighting the vital role of the construction sector in building and maintaining America's infrastructure. As chairman of the Highways & Transit Subcommittee, it’s great to see how the industry is building a stronger America!

National Police Week Legislation

This past week we also celebrated National Police Week, a time to honor the men and women who serve and protect our communities! The House took the week as an opportunity to pass legislation focused on protecting and defending our law enforcement officers.

My colleagues and I passed the LEOSA Reform Act (H.R. 2243), the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act (H.R. 2255), and the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act (H.R. 2240).

H.R. 2243: Allows qualified law enforcement officers who have committed themselves to their communities the opportunity to continue doing so by extending their concealed carry privileges.

H.R. 2255: Allows current federal law enforcement officers in good standing to purchase a retired weapon at market value from a federal agency.

H.R. 2240: Requires the Department of Justice to collect and report data on violent attacks against law enforcement officers, including government responses and gaps in reporting.

This Week's Good News Story

For this week's good news story, I'm recognizing Jersey Mike's in Wilmington where they raised $167,599.37 for the nonprofit Paws4People. Customers had the option to round their purchase or donate, and on March 26, all sales and contributions from 18 local stores were donated. Paws4People helps place service dogs with individuals in need, including veterans, children with special needs, and trauma survivors. This effort was part of Jersey Mike’s annual Month of Giving, which raised over $30 million for 200+ local charities, bringing their total raised to $143 million over the past 15 years.
