Hosting a Veterans Roundtable

It was a pleasure hosting my Veterans Advisory Council meeting in Robeson County this past Monday.  By bringing together local veterans and those who support veterans in our communities, we are able to discuss policy and management issues of concern.

Working for our veterans in Southeastern North Carolina is one of my top priorities, and it was an honor to hear their firsthand experiences, receive their thoughts and concerns, and collaborate on how Congress can ensure every veteran has access to the support they deserve.

Our conversation centered around ways Congress can improve access to quality care and proper resources for our veterans.  We discussed the best ways to push the Veterans Administration to improve long wait times, the staffing shortages at VA hospitals, how to improve the onerous VA appeals process as well as the many other customer service issues that all originate with poor management and training.

The information gathered during our discussion will continue to guide my legislative work in Congress and provides me with a list of complaints for the VA.  I appreciate them sharing their input as well as their work to improve the quality of life for veterans in our community.

Visiting NC-07 Job Creators

Touring Pepsi Bottling Ventures in St. Pauls

Since 1898, North Carolina has been home to Pepsi-Cola where it was proudly invented by New Bern pharmacist, Caleb Bradham.

Thanks to Pepsi Bottling Ventures in St. Pauls for showing me around the state-of-the-art distribution facility.  I enjoyed meeting the hard-working employees and learning more about the $6.1 billion economic impact the beverage industry has on our state.

Visiting Silgan and Campbell's Soup Facility in Robeson County

It was a pleasure touring the Silgan and Campbell’s joint can and soup facility in Robeson County.  This facility proudly supports many jobs in North Carolina’s Seventh District.  The ability to source the raw materials needed to produce the cans used for Campbell’s many products is a central concern for these two companies.

This Week's Good News Story

For this week's good news story, I'm highlighting the Dosher Memorial Hospital nurses who recently ranked among the best in the nation.  According to the State Port Pilot, "In a recent report compiled by Becker’s Hospital Review, Dosher Memorial Hospital was listed as one of 364 top hospitals nationwide for nurse communication and one of eight in the State of North Carolina. According to the report published in Becker’s, the nurse communication rating combined data from three HCAHPS survey questions that summarizes how well patients feel that their nurses explained things clearly, listened carefully to the patient and treated the patient with courtesy and respect."  Nurses play a critical role in our healthcare system.  As our healthcare workforce continues to face challenges, let us thank and applaud all of our nurses for their efforts to provide quality care for their patients.
