Champion Fourth Annual WATERS Summit to Advance Flood Solutions

WILMINGTON, NC - Today, Congressmen David Rouzer (R-NC-07) and Greg Murphy, M.D. (R-NC-03) held the fourth annual Water Adaption to Ensure Regional Success Summit (WATERS Summit) at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington North Carolina. The non-partisan event brought together leaders from all levels of government, issue experts, and flood-mitigation professionals to share ideas and solutions for tackling inland flooding and coastal water risks. Representatives Rouzer and Murphy both joined virtually due to votes in Washington.

"I’m grateful we were able to host another successful and informative WATERS Summit this year, especially after last year’s event had to be canceled because of Hurricane Helene. That storm is another reminder of the constant threat to life and property during and after, requiring collaborative efforts among all stakeholders and at all levels of government," said Rep. Rouzer. "The presentations and discussions today focused on topics such as flood mitigation and solutions, including innovative water management as well as mitigation and recovery practices that have proven successful. I look forward to working with all our partners to turn these conversations into meaningful action for the citizens of North Carolina."

"While I had to participate remotely to be in Washington to vote to reopen the government, the Fourth Annual WATERS Summit was a remarkable success," said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. "Hundreds from across North Carolina and the country came together to collaborate on strategies for flood mitigation, water preservation, rebuilding efforts, and preparation for future catastrophes. Last year, Western North Carolina was tragically devastated by Hurricane Helene, a historic disaster that no one could have predicted. While our efforts and attention were immediately drawn to helping our mountain neighbors, this year, we reflected on how we can best prepare our communities for intense weather systems and manage flooding. I appreciate all of our participants and attendees for their dedication to implementing innovative ways to manage waterway issues. It is vital to protect livelihoods and our communities against unpredictable calamities and to preserve the richness of North Carolina for future generations."

2025 WATERS Summit speakers included: Rep. David Rouzer (NC-07) (virtual), Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) (virtual), Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) (virtual), Senator Ted Budd (virtual), Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, NC House Speaker Destin Hall, NC House Majority Leader John Bell, and American Flood Coalition Director Tony McEwen. Several stakeholders were also represented, including NC Department of Transportation, NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, NC Soil and Water Commission, NC Department of Environmental Quality, and the US Department of Agriculture, in addition to private organizations and leading academic institutions.
